After months of vacillation, I finally bought the Kindle. I never had doubts about the value of the device. After all, the Kindle is the massive materialization of a concept that I had entertained twenty years earlier, and which, soon after, thanks to the drive of more industrious people, became known as “electronic ink.” No, during those months of indecision I had wondered about the right moment to buy, knowing that exciting features like color and touch-screen capabilities would be available in the near future. But I decided that the Kindle was a reasonably mature product, that Amazon’s e-catalog was rich and expanding, and that life is too short to keep waiting.

Though my intention is a short meditation on the societal implications of electronic publishing’s emergence–and not a product review–allow me nonetheless to list some of the reasons why I am enthusiastic about Amazon’s new device:

*	I can carry the contents of about three thousand five hundred books in a unit that weighs about five hundred grams. Moreover, in case of failure, or loss, I can recover from Amazon the contents of the Kindle.
*	I can search for all occurrences of a word or a character in the book or article I am reading (longing for the “search” feature had led me to dream about the electronic ink twenty years ago).
*	I can quickly obtain the dictionary entry to any word in the text.
*	I can underline and annotate the text. Although I never liked leaving marks on books, I would like today to be able to read my own reactions to some of the pieces I read at different stages of my life. (Kindle’s keyboard is rather rudimentary, but I had no difficulties in making annotations during recent long flights NYC-SFO and EZE-SJC.)
*	The glare-free screen is a tremendous bonus for outdoor reading. (I have not taken it to the beach yet, and I have some apprehension about the sand sifting through the keyboard.)

I cannot overemphasize how much I cherish the ability to carry all my books with me. I have
